Mother's Day Toddler Art Project Ideas

Mother's Day is right around the corner, in fact it's on Sunday, May 12, 2013. While trying to brain storm ideas for projects my toddler could do I came up with a couple of ideas. One for me and another for my mom (yes mom, that is why you already know about yours).

I purchases some 8x10 board mounted canvas from Michael's as well as some fun scrap booking letters.  I also purchased a Melissa and Doug watercolor set similar to this Melissa & Doug Take-Along Watercolor Paint Set. I chose to cover the colors I didn't want used with painter's tape so that the entire project didn't end up brown (been there and done that). I placed the sticker letters for my monogram on one and spelled out Grandma on the other.

I gave my daughter a brush, watercolors, a cup of water and the canvas and let he do what she wanted to do. She swirled, brushed and dotted to her hearts content. The paintings did take a long time to dry due to the amount of paint and water she used. I waited until fully dry to remove the letters. There was quite a bit of bleeding under the letters but they are all still recognizable.

They came out fantastic! What do you think? This project could easily say mom, dad or even a cute saying. My daughter's project turned out much better and prettier than I had anticipated the final results would be. I think taping off the colors that wouldn't mix well together was a huge help. I am going to frame them with simple frames, a white one for my mom and a black one for my home. I can't wait to get it hung. Now I just need to decide where to put it.

What are you making with your little for Mother's Day? I have another post coming up which uses this art project which has been made into something every mom would love and better yet, actually use!

  11. She did such a nice job. Most kids would muddle them until they look like mud! She has a real flair for color.
