10 Tips For De-Cluttering and Organizing Your Kids Toys

Have you seen the new Hot Wheels® Wall Tracks™ sets? Hot Wheels and Social Moms have teamed up to help you cut the clutter. They are sponsoring this blogging opportunity for moms to share their 10 tips for de-cluttering and organizing your kids toys in their playrooms and bedrooms. Currently living in a small space, this has been a challenge for us.

1. Designate a specific area for toys and playing. In our living room we have a small rug to designate a special place for our daughter to play with her toys.

2. Storage is key. Use baskets, bins or boxes to house toys. Clear plastic boxes are also great so your children can see what is in them. We have a cube bookshelf for Mia's toys and books. Make sure you utilize wall space too!

3. Have a bookshelf at an accessible height for books, magazines and games. Put DVDs and video games in an album with sleeves. This takes up so much less space.

4. If it is missing pieces, toss it. or if your child is not willing to part with then look for missing pieces on ebay.

5. Rotate toys. Children can easily get bored with their toys that they see on a daily basis. Rotate them every couple of weeks and those lonely toys with seem new again.

6. Put like things together. Keep blocks with blocks, books with books, dolls and doll clothes together, etc.

7. Label and label some more. The easier it is to identify where things go the more likely you will be to find them there. Make sure everything has a specific home. Having everything labeled will also encourage reading. If your child is too young to read use a picture along with the written word.

8. Donate toys your children have outgrown. There are so many charities in need. Donating them is a great way to share joy with children less fortunate.

9. Sell toys no longer played with at a consignment sale. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE consignment sales. My favorite sale is the Just Between Friends Consignment sale! This is a nationwide sale, check to see if you have one in your area too. Also a great way to be green. Most of the toys sold at these sales are in great condition and have lots of life left in them. Earn money to use towards future toy purchases.

10. Designate a clean up time(s). Make clean-up time a routine and STICK with it! Before lunch and before bed are great times for us. Make it fun and put on music or sing the "clean-up" song.

It will take a little time to get the toys organized and sorted. Once it is done it is easy to maintain as long a you keep up with it on a regular basis. Don't forget to get your kids involved too! Have fun!
