My Ideal U.S. Family Great Getaway

SocialMoms and Alamo Rent A Car are sponsoring a blogging promotion to find out about the ideal U.S. Family Great Getaway. There are so many places to discover throughout the United States that it is difficult to choose just one. My favorite and most memorable vacation was a road trip. Two years my husband and I took an amazing vacation and one of our destinations was Washington DC.

Of all of my travels I have never had such a great time while learning so much about the country I love in. Our Nation's capital is amazing and beautiful at the same time. I was surprised to find out that all of the Smithsonian Museums are free to everyone. My favorite stops of the day were the Natural History Museum and the National Air and Space Museum. You may ask, the most amazing works of are and historical artifacts are free to see? Yes they are! We saw everything from dinosaurs and art master pieces to the Hope Diamond. There are so many things to see all within walking distance. Although I do recommend a good pair of walking shoes because it was a long day.

You can also visit and explore the U.S. Capitol Building, the White House, the Library of Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court. If you plan in advance it may even be possible to get a tour from your Congressional Representative. I was really surprised to see that the White House was smaller than I had always imagined. The front lawn was beautiful and it was wonderful to know that it held so much history. The Library of Congress contains the US Constitution. Ant the National Monuments are a spectacular sight.

The Lincoln Memorial and reflection pond are must see places during your visit. Although I did not get to see it during this trip. On my next trip to Washington DC I hope to visit Arlington National Cemetery and witness the changing of the guards ceremony. The other thing I plan to do is visit the World War II Memorial to remember and honor our U.S. soldiers.

Don't pass up an opportunity to ride the Metrorail. It was inexpensive and safe. I have to admit that it was my first experience on public transportation. It was packed, but definitely a memorable experience.

Of all of my vacations, this was by far my favorite. Yes, it beat out Key West and Maui. I was able to see parts of our Nation's history and I cannot wait to share those things with my daughter, Mia. I plan to make sure that she doesn't wait over 30 years to see the history of this amazing country I am fortunate to live in! I hope everyone has the opportunity to take the trip I did. What is your ideal U.S. family getaway? Do you have cherished places you like to visit with your kids? I look forward to hearing about them!
